Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Erect, scandent, or prostrate shrubs, rarely herbaceous.

Stems: Stems sometimes rooting at the tip or at the nodes, usually prickly.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple or compound (palmate or pinnate). Alternate. Margins often toothed or entire. Petiolate. Stipules adnate to base of petioles, these sometimes lobed, persistent or caducous.

Flowers: Flowers usually in corymbose, racemose, or paniculate inflorescences or solitary. Flowers bisexual (perfect), 1 to numerous. Receptacle raised. Calyx of 5 persistent sepals. Corolla of 5 petals, white to rose or sometimes yellowish. Stamens numerous. Ovary superior, carpels usually numerous, inserted on the raised receptacle, 1-celled; ovules 2 per cell; style filiform, subterminal, persistent.

Fruit: Fruit globose or ovoid; consisting of coherent; fleshy; juicy drupelets; crowded together on the receptacle; readily detaching from it or receptacle breaking off with them. Seeds 1 per drupelet.

USES

  • Pink dye from fruit

  • The ash of dried ‘ākala stem and naupaka (Scaevola spp.) is used for kepia (dandruff). Ashes of ‘ākala stem and ripe he‘i (papaya, Carica papaya) are ingetsed as a treatment for umauma naha (burning effect in the chest ) and hoaoa lua‘i (stomach ailment with vomiting) (Chun 1994:20–21).

  • Used primarily for its edible fruit (Handy et al 1972:235); rose colored dye obtained from the ripe fruit (Abbott 1992:56). This plant was also invoked by kahuna as a symbol of freeing during rituals (Chun 1994:20).
